Being a Good Tuition Tutor, you become a person who likes to assist the Student in Learning. You teach your student how to do the work. You should not do the work for that student.

Just a saying: Give a man a fish and it lasts a meal. Teach a man how to fish and it lasts for life.

Master the ways to tutor effectively.

In order to become an effective tuition tutor, you need to set priorities and develop a scheme of work plans for each particular student.

You need to know the subject syllabus and follow the scheme of work plans. You need to learn good tutoring techniques. Understand the student expectation and yours. Mutually agreed on the rules set with the student and follow accordingly. 
Do not be afraid to say that you don't know the answer to a question. Offer to help the student find the answer in the next lesson. During the tuition period, listen closely to the student and observe that you understand the question/ assignment before you help the student. Praise the student at each opportunity arises. Giving good feedback to the student. It does motivate the student.

Knowing your student well.

Each student have a certain learning habit and style. Some students learn best in the early morning at 5am and other in the afternoon 5pm. Of-coarse, some like the night period. You also need to understand the differences between you and the student. Student in Secondary Normal Technical (i.e.: Sec NT) and those in the Integrated Program (i.e.: IP) are far difference. Those in IP, you may not match with them. Don't be afraid to tell their parents. The student needs to find another tutor. It is important to know that a tutor does not have to diagnose learning disabilities. If you suspect that a student has a learning disability, refer the student to their parents. Tell them to seek help from the medical doctor.

Know the Basis Responsibility.

“First Impression Count”. Remember that students and their parents will judge you by your appearance. Be smartly dressed!

Show your highest qualification to the parents during your first lesson. This is to avoid them from making the wrong judgment.

Always be prepared for every lesson & keep up with the latest school syllabus.

If you foresee that you are going to be more than 10 minutes late for a lesson then it courteous to let the student or parent know in advance. Keep the phone numbers of both parents & student accessible in a booklet or mobile phone.

If you are going through a topic with the student, and you see that the lesson time is complete, spend a few minutes to finish what you are doing. Don’t finish the lesson abruptly in mid-topic!

The time management skills and disciplines that you develop as a student can help you for the rest of your life. Here are some tips to help you develop good time management skills.

A. Create good study habits  

1. Study at the same time each day so that it becomes a habit.
2. Plan for weekly reviews.
3. Set aside blocks of study time (about 45 minutes each).
4. Keep your study area just for studying and get rid of distractions.
5. Write down assignments in every class including the DUE DATE and then "check off" items as you complete them.
6. Take advantage of "open time windows."
* Use the time you spend waiting, walking, riding, etc. to review what you've learned.
* Just before class, quickly review your notes or readings relating to that class.

B. Plan Properly for Peak Performance

1. Set up a school-year calendar to get a big picture of your semester—don't include too much detail at this point.
2. Schedule your fixed commitments. Block out time for papers, projects, readings, meetings, scheduled exams, holidays, breaks, presentations, etc.
* Allot time for planned recreation, sports, club activities, etc.
* Enter important dates for your social and family life.
* Leave free time for yourself so you have flexibility.

Without a date, you’ll procrastinate. Whenever you get an assignment, set a goal for when you’re going to start it so you can finish without a last minute panic.
 
1. Once you’re given a due date on an assignment, count backwards from the due date to establish a start date. Take into account time you’ll be spending on other items like social events, sports, etc. Refer to your school calendar where you’ve blocked out time you’ve committed to other things.

2. Keep stress to a minimum. Start early to avoid a frantic finish.
 
3. If you usually wait until the last minute to study or work on an assignment, instead of making your goal to finish on time, make your goal to finish early.
 
4. Remember the riddle, “How do you eat an elephant?” The answer: “A bite at a time.”

4. Tips for First time Tutor with First Tuition Assignment at First Tuition Lesson.

What to bring and show at first lesson?
 
1. Copy of Qualifications: Show it during all 1st lessons.
2. NRIC: Show it during all 1st lessons.
3. Foolscap Paper: For your scribbling.
4. Calculator: For calculating purposes in Maths, Science and others.
5. Dictionary: Use it as teaching aids.
6. Tools: Red ink pen, pencil, eraser, ruler and others.
7. Attendance Book: Ensure the student signed at each lesson, to avoid future trouble.
8. Communication Book: Progress report and homework for student.
9. Drinking water: for yourself.

Before the lesson:
1. Call the Parent one day ahead, in case they forgotten and ask to speak to student/s.
2. Revise the topics. Refresh it mentally.
3. Plan your trip to arrive 5~10 minutes earlier. Be punctual.
4. Plan your lesson: Try to avoid using the student's text-book to teach?
5. Ask the student, do you want homework? If student want, just give 2 and tell if you’ve time, please do more.
6. Buy Assessment Book if parent agreed. Keep the receipt and ask for revetment.
7. Each lesson you prepare 2 model answers and give it to student for refer.
8. Communication Book: Progress report and homework for student.

At 1st lesson:
1. Introduce yourself: Be friendly and keep a Smiling Face. Remember, a Smile is worth a thousand words. 
2. Ask how the student is performing, the weaker subject and school attending now.
3. Set academic target with the student.
